Hallmarks on Gold Cufflinks
Ever wondered what the hallmarks actually mean on your jewellery? Here’s an example and explanation.
If, for example, you have a 750 mark on your cufflinks, this means that the gold of your cufflinks is made from 18ct gold which is 750 parts pure gold per 1000.
Here are the marks for jewellery which relate to purity of the metal. So, the number relates to the number of parts pure gold per 1000.
- Gold – 375, 585, 750, 916, 990, 999 (no requirement to hallmark for items weighing less than 1 gram)
- Silver – 800, 925, 958, 999 (no requirement to hallmark for items weighing less than 7.78 grams)
- Platinum – 850, 900, 950, 999 (no requirement to hallmark for items weighing less than 0.5 grams)
- Palladium – 500, 950, 999 (no requirement to hallmark for items weighing less than 1 gram).
Gold, silver and platinum are alloyed with copper or other metals as in their pure form, these precious metals would be too soft.
