Friday the 13th Accessories

When you think of Friday the 13th, there are usually two things that come to mind: the film franchise featuring the scary Jason Voorhees or the actual day itself, which can occur a few times a year. We won’t be talking about Jason, but of the actual day itself and our fascination with it.

Some people love the day and happily play a few tricks on their friends while others genuinely fear the day, expecting the worst at every turn. At Deakin & Francis, we love the spooky and the mysterious, as we explore Friday the 13th phenomenon and suggest some interesting items you can wear and use when the day comes around.

What is Friday the 13th?

Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstitions. The day occurs when the 13th day of a month in the Gregorian calendar falls on a Friday. The event happens at least once every year to a maximum of three times a year. 2015 had a Friday the 13th in February, March and November. 2020 will see two in total while 2021 and 2022 will have just one each.

The month which begins on a Sunday is guaranteed to have a Friday the 13th.

Friday the 13th Superstitions

We know the fear of the number 13 as “triskaidekaphobia” while the fear of Friday the 13 is known as paraskevidekatriaphobia which comes from the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή, meaning “Friday”), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς, meaning “thirteen”).

The origins of the unlucky nature attached to “13” came from a Norse myth of 12 gods at a dinner party in Valhalla. The god of mischief, Loki, who wasn’t invited to the meal, arrived as the 13th guest and arranged for Höðr to shoot Balder with a mistletoe-tipped arrow. The death of Balder caused the whole Earth to go dark, considering it a bad and unlucky day.

Other possible origins include the story of Jesus and The Last Supper where 13 individuals were present on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before Jesus was crucified on Good Friday.

Friday 13th October 1307 was the day that Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of the Knights Templar is a 20th suggestion for the origin of the superstition – it has featured in various novels, including The Da Vinci Code.
